Tips for Riding

  1. Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.
  2. Make sure you’re at the right stop.
  3. When you see the bus coming, wave your hand to signal the driver to stop the bus. If you’re traveling at night, a telephone screen or flashlight can be useful.
  4. Passengers are requested to limit carry-on items to ensure a smooth boarding process. Once boarding begins, returning to the curb to retrieve additional bags or belongings will not be permitted. All carry-on items must be manageable in a single trip and should fit either on your lap or under the seat. Items must not block aisles, seats, or designated wheelchair areas. Oversized items, such as large bags, boxes, or bulky packages, will result in the passenger not being allowed to board.
    • For the safety and comfort of all passengers and the driver, bags of garbage or recycling that are leaking or emit odors are not permitted on board, as they create an unhealthy environment and may damage Sonoma County Transit property. If a bag begins to leak, the passenger will be asked to deboard.
  5. Personal carts or wagons must not exceed 21″ W x 24.5″ L x 40.12″ H. Carts must be folded and stowed either beneath the seat or in front of the passenger. They must not block aisles, seats, or designated wheelchair areas. Passengers are expected to be mindful of others and ensure that carts do not impede movement or create a tripping hazard. Wheelchair users always have priority in designated wheelchair areas. If the bus is full and there is no safe space to store a folded cart or wagon, the driver may ask the passenger to wait for the next bus.
  6. When paying a cash fare, please have the exact amount ready; drivers don’t carry change. If you’re using a bus pass, have it ready upon boarding. Proper ID is required when paying a discounted fare (student, senior, disabled and Medicare care holder fare). To find out what you might be eligible for, see the Fares page.
  7. When the bus stops, wait for other passengers to exit and then board through the front doors of the bus.
  8. All buses are accessible to people with disabilities. If you’d like, request that the bus be lowered or the wheelchair lift/ramp deployed.
  9. Once on board, find a seat and enjoy the ride. Please remember the following:
    • No smoking or use of e-cigarettes are allowed on the bus.
    • No eating or drinking on the bus.
    • All passengers must wear a shirt and shoes.
    • No profanity, harassment or disruptive behavior allowed on the bus.
    • Service animals may accompany persons with disabilities. The owner is responsible for the actions of the service animal while on board.
    • Pets are allowed as long as they are secured in a commercial, hand-carried pet carrier that can be held on the passenger’s lap or placed under the seat. Carriers must not block aisles and cannot be placed on seats or in wheelchair securement areas.
    • All radios, phones and other audible devices must be used with earphones. Volume must be at a level that is not disruptive to others on the bus.
    • Please keep front seats available for seniors and people with disabilities.
  10. As the bus approaches your stop, push the yellow signal tape located between the windows. This alerts the driver to stop at the next bus stop.
  11. Carefully exit the bus. If you have a bicycle on the front rack, please inform the driver before disembarking.
